| EPDM Material Precautions |
|
• Storage of EPDM materials
should be cool and dry but never exposed to freezing
conditions and well ventilated.
• Ensure all lids are securely replaced onto
the relevant containers to minimise the products exposure
to air. Store and usage must be away from all sources
of heat, flame or sparks.
• Stir/Mix the HP250 and contact adhesive before
use and during to give a constant colour therefore
agitating any sediment in the can.
• When using in hot conditions try to store
cans away from direct sunlight, for long periods.
Extreme hot weather may cause curing of the HP250.
• Insulate the EPDM system from direct contact
with heat sources in excess of 82 degree Celsius when
installed.
• Never use torches or heat guns to accelerate
the curing process of HP250 or the adhesives, air
dry only.
• If used in confined areas must have suitable
air source to ensure safe working conditions.
• No naked flames.

|
| Substrate Considerations |
|
| To ensure a quality finished roofing system some basic
steps must be taken to give a smooth, even finished
surface. |
|
| |
|
| Conditions |
Description |
| Smooth |
Surface to be free of
sharp edges, all fixings level with surface. |
| Flowing |
If the surface has potential
ponding areas this should try and be rectified.
In no way will the standing water affect the life
span or quality of the finished EPDM roofing system. |
| Dry |
If the area to be bonded
has been open to weather conditions, water, frost,
ice or snow must be cleared from the relevant
surface. |
| Clean |
All areas (deck and upstand)
to be adhered must be swept clean of all dirt,
stones and dust. Using adhesives on dusty surfaces
will reduce the strength of the bond between the
EPDM and relevant surface. |
| Voids |
There must be no voids
greater than 5mm span, have to be filled with
a suitable material or over decked to cover the
gaps. |
|
| |
|
| Re-Decking Considerations |
|
A wide range of deck materials
may be encountered on existing buildings due to be
refurbished. These may include timber boarding, aerated
concrete and straw boards.
On no account should strawboard, softboard
or chipboard be considered suitable materials for
fixing to.
Suitable decking material materials
usually are timber boards for re-deck this must be
minimum of 18mm thickness and either
OSB grade 3, or exterior plywood,
suitable single ply insulation boards can also be
considered.
Decking must be fitted to allow smooth
joints with gaps no greater than 5mm between edges
but also allow 2-3mm expansion gaps between boards.
When laying boards they must also be staggered to
alternate joint positions.
|
|
| |
|
| Weather Precautions |
|
The weather must be considered
when using the EPDM roofing system.
• At low temperatures care
must be taken not to lay the materials at a guide
line below 3-4 degree Celsius.
• The flashing tapes need to be at body temperature
for minimum working operation.
• In colder conditions the curing off time of
the adhesives and the primer will be greater, so extra
time must be allowed.
• As the deck adhesive is water based it is
possible to still fit the main sheets when the boards
are damp. The areas that are going to be bonded with
contact adhesive must be dry. The same applies to
areas to be primed and flashed.
Plan work accordingly
so that a weather tight seal can be achieved over
night.

|
| Installations |
|
| General Guidelines |
|
Before commencement of work ensure
that you have all the relevant materials e.g. primer,
adhesives and tapes. Make sure you have correct tools.
(See tool list).
• Think about which way to
lay the sheets so as to minimise wastage of materials.
• Position the sheets as close as possible to
finished position allowing excess material for terminations.
• Check all measurements before cutting. Work
clean and tidy.
|
|
| |
|
| Fully Bonded Decking |
|
Decking work all complete
with 50mm x 25mm
treated batten upstand on non-runoff edges. Also
fix 50mm x 25mm on front of fascia level with
decking to create step into gutter.
|
|
| |
|
Cut EPDM to size allowing
an overlap on all perimeters.
Lay in correct position and smooth out the majority
of creases.
If laying more than one piece of material mark the
edges on the deck to give accurate glue lines when
applying.
|
|
| |
|
Fold or roll back the sheet material to half its length.
Using a paint roller (225mm short haired preferably
on a pole) apply the water based deck adhesive. Aiming
to achieve a smooth even application of decking adhesive.
|
|
| |
|
When applying keep the
water base adhesive 50mm away from any upstand termination.
This is where the contact adhesive is used. Take the
water base all the way up to the gutter edge.
If possible leave the exposed decking adhesive, roughly
5 minutes before laying the fleece onto the area.
|
|
| |
|
When ready to lay the
EPDM, walk the material down laying it on to the glued
surface.
Starting from the glue point, push the air out from
under the rubber using the squeegee. Do this from
the middle to the end of the sheet not pushing the
squeegee to the sides.
For the remaining area repeat the process.
